Magazine Advert Developments

I decided to use the same image as the cover of my digipak for my magazine advert. I felt as though having a link between the two makes it more memorable among existing and future customer.

I experimented with a range of different backgrounds and overlays before I chose the final design. I soon figured that adding some colour to the design made even the slightest difference and made the advert pop more.

Free Poster

After doing some research, I found out that some digipaks have free posters attached to the pack for fans to paste on walls or do whatever they want with them. This helps to promote the artist as a whole and helps the audience to remember them.

I decided to include this unique aspect to my digipak by including a free poster 'signed' by the artist.
I did a photoshoot with my artist and got some potential images. The shots are very simple design but still effective.

Chosen Photo:

I made the final poster black and white as I felt that it gave the photo some edge and looked better in black and white generally.

Magazine Advert ANALYSIS

'Red' - Taylor Swift

I like this advert as the image itself used is not in colour but rather black and white. This immediately draws attention to the main texts in the advert, such as the name of the album (RED) and the artists name, as well as other information which accompanies the magazine advert and promotion of the new album. Once again, just like the Rita Ora poster, three main colours have been stuck to. I believe this is very effective, especially when one of the colours has significance to the name of the album. The colours red, white and black are used. Black and white texts compliments the black and white imagery used as the background of the magazine advert. This once again has some significance between the artist and the what is being advertised. The cover of the album has also been included on the design to help audiences recognise what they are buying. What I also noticed is how the same font used on the album cover has been used on the magazine advert title for the word 'RED'. Lastly, other relevant information has been included, such as examples of songs featured on the album, what date the album is available and where it can be purchased. Once again, the artist has included the link to her website so customers can find out other information.

Adele 21

This is a great example of a minimalist magazine advert design. All the necessary information has been included.
The imagery used for the magazine advert has the same tone and mood as the image used for the album cover. Black and white has been used with a major focus on shadows to create a certain mood in the image. Two colours have been used on the text - white and green. Once again, this is an effective technique as it helps the audience to immediately recognise the artist and what is being advertised as there is correlation between the advert and the album cover. The same font and and layout has been used in the album title - ADELE 21. This also helps to give the image some proportion and balance, as there aren't too many things on the page. The advert also includes the fact that she is a Grammy Winner, which aso contributes to promoting her as an artist, as some people may use that to decided whether they want a CD or not. In small print, the companies she has worked with has been mentioned. This gives the companies some publicity as well.

Magazine Advert ANALYSIS

The ORA Tour - Rita Ora

The main element that I really like about this advert is the use of three main colours, and how the designer has consistently stuck to these colours. The use of red, white and black has been effectively used to convey a message to their target audience. Although the advert doesn't include an image of her album which would be played on the tour, her image has been made the focal point of this advert, while the accompanying artists have been made much smaller to show Rita Ora as the main artist of the night. Both Rita Oras name as well as her accompanying artists 'Iggy Azalea' and 'Havana Brown' have been written in red to show that they are the artists. Their pictures have also been included on the advert to either remind audiences of who they are or to allow them to match the face to the name. The tour dates have also been included, along with the venues that the event will take place. Lastly a link to each of the artists website has been included, so audiences can find out more or even look into their new and or previously released albums. The positioning of the images with the text has been done very well by making sure the most important parts of a text is larger and bolder than other text which isn't as important.

'Right Place Right Time - Olly Murs'

In comparison to Rita Ora's advert design, this is more of a quirky fun design which could possibly reflect the artists image/personality. There is a link between the name 'Olly Murs' and the actual image of the artist. The colour used for the name of the artist is the same colour as the artists suspenders in the image. The designer has thought about how to link the overall image of the artist with the promotion of their product. The name of the album has been included on the advert, but the image of the album has been left out. The name of the album on sale has also been written in a different font and colour. This allows the audience to know the difference between the name of the album and the rest of the advert.
The words 'OUT NOW' has been used just underneath the album title to provide information on when it is available to customers. I also like how two hits from the album has been included on the advert so customers are able to immediately know what kind of songs have been included in the album. Laslty, a link to the artists website has been included on the advert to give customers the opportunity to find out more information. My favourite element about this advert is how the artist image fills half the page while the relevant information fills the other half of the page. This also helps to make him centre.

Already Existing Magazine Adverts

We have started looking at magazine adverts for our digipaks and how new album releases can be promoted.

I looked into Jesse J 'Who You Are' album release magazine advert as well as Rihannas 'Rated R' advert and have been made my own notes regarding how each artist has been represented and their music promoted, as well as how it links with the album being promoted.

Functions of a magazine advert:

1. To promote the artist
2. To sell the song
3. To be eye catching

Conventions of a magazine advert:

1. The release date
-Important as the audience needs to know when they can purchase the album
2. Album/song title
-To be able to purchase the album, you would need to know the name of it
3. Image of album cover
-To help the audience purchase it, they would need to know what the album looks like. This also helps to promote the band.
4. Artist name
-The audience needs to know what the name of the artist/band is
5. Information about album
-So the target audience can get an idea of what would be in the album and what some of the song titles are.
6. Where it is available to purchase
-Audience would be able to know where they can purchase and which platforms it is available.
7. Record label logo
-By knowing which record labels they are signed to, we would know what kind of music it is.

Making My Digipak - CD & Inside

I wanted to try something different on the inside of my digipak, rather than have an image of the artist.
I decided to use gold and silver vinyl. This created a very nice pattern and made the inside of the digipak pop. I used this as well for the design of the CD. Since my CD would slip inside, I decided to experiment with a blank CD

I initially thought about using a mixture of colours of vinyl on the inside. But after realising that my digipak itself was silver, I thought that silver and gold would work well together.

I used vinyl for the CD as well in order for both the inside and the CD to match and create a pattern on the inside.

Making My Digipak - Tracklist

As I used a shot from the music for the front of my digipak, I also decided to use a shot for the back of the digipak with the tracklist.

Back of Digipak

I picked out three words from the albums track list and made them stand out more than the other, by using the colour red and using a black rectangle behind it. One of the songs highlighted is the name of our music video (Canon Ball). To match this, I made the colour of the numbers red, in order to make them stand out too.

My group and I have made up our own record label 'Whitewebbs'. This makes it unique and also gave us the chance to create a symbol/logo
 which would go with this.

The picture used at the front and at the back have some relation as they are shots taken from the same scene.

Making My Digipak - Digipak Cover

After creating my outer sleeve, I went on to create my digipak.
Because I wanted my digipak to have some link with the music video, I decided to use shots from our music videos. Below is the shot I used for the cover.

Front of digipak
I decided not to add any writing to the front of the digipak, as there is already writing on the sleeve which includes the album name and artist name.

This is the net that I created with the dimensions needed for the digipak. I used silver card which was silver on one side and white on the other.

I decided to have three sides but fold one side to hold the CD, when the CD slips in.

Making My Digipak - Outer Sleeve

I decided to hand-make my digipak as I thought I could create some unique features which could be added to the digipak.
Here are some photos.

This is the outer sleeve that I created for my digipak. I used shiny silver card and placed the design of the 'Animal' cover on top of it. My digipak would slip into here.

Front

The scratches on the front was created using a pair of scissors and making scratches all over the front.

My digipak

I decided to hand-make my digipak using materials such as cardboard and vinyl. This is gave me a lot of control over how exactly I wanted the digipak to look. This also allowed me to have a final product in my hand.

Before choosing the design that I wanted for the front cover of my digipak, I took a free screenshots from the music video.

I finally decided on this cover:

Cover of digipak

I like this cover as I think it goes well with the design of the sleeve (below). It is very simple and links well with the music video.

Cover of outer sleeve
This is the design of outer sleeve which would hold the digipak. It is very simple yet effective as the title is the first thing one sees.
