Media Showcase Feedback

We have just had our media showcase to show both the AS openings and A2 music videos.
Below is the video of the show case:

Overall, this was a success as we were able to see peoples expressions and reaction to the different music videos. It also gave us the chance to receive feedback from the people who attended (who also happened to be our target group). A pack of feedback sheets were placed on each seat so visitors could give their honest opinion as each music video is played.
At the start of each music video, each group had to go up to give a little introduction to their music video and also give a brief description and information behind the choice of song, genre and target group etc.

After the show case, we got the chance to chat to a few of the visitors in order to receive feedback on video for our evaluation.
Below is a compilation of all the people we questioned.

FINAL MUSIC VIDEO!!

This is our FINAL music video, which we are very proud of. Although we thought we had originally finished a couple of days ago, we came across a few things we could make changes to, which actually made a difference to the overall product.

Media Showcase

So in order to showcase our music video products to our target market, we will be holding a media showcase event where we can invite people to come and watch the products created by the AS ans A2 students.
This showcase will give us the opportunity to receive feedback from our chosen target group in order to commence with our evaluation.

Representation of People/Groups

We've decided to take a different route to representing our female protagonist. As the first part of our music video was inspired by 'Panic At The Disco - This is Gospel', we decided to follow the along the lines of this by representing our female protagonist as 'weak' and unable to escape her current situation. We have kept our narrative restricted, by keeping it minimal with parts unclear. This leaves our audience in the dark about certain parts of the narrative and allows the audience to decode the narrative differently. Our audience sees the main protagonist tied down and injected with something that makes the fall asleep. However the audience doesn't know why. But through the use of the lyrics 'Free The Animal' they are able to interpret the reason why in their own ways.
Through the use of fast paced editing, the audience is told that something is clearly wrong and should be fixed.

'WARNING' Sign Update

We have decided to remove the 'WARNING' sign at the start of our music video, as we were advised not to add it. This made it quite controversial, as so we thought it would be best not to add it. We have however taken into account the flashing lights throughout our music video which may be of harm to someone who may view this product and will take it into account for future purposes. As for our music video, we have taken the advice not to add it in.

New Draft Music Video

As our deadline is approaching, we have added a few more things to the video, which include the song and band name title at the start of the music video. After realising that we needed to create more jump cuts in our music video, and reduce the shot durations, we decided to cut a lot of our shots to make them shorter, so it looks like a music video.

This is where we have currently gotten up to:

Due to the beginning of our music video having so many flashing images, we have taken into account people who may be sensitive to this. Therefore, we decided to add a 'WARNING' sign at the start of our music video so people are aware of this before watching.

This is an example of a music video which makes use of this warning sign.

Final Filming

In order to have an effective end to our music video, we decided to have an extra day of filming to film the last shots.
We decided that we would incorporate shots which links to the beginning of our music video. This was shot in the photography dark room by using a test tube and film developer. These shots will be used in between a range of shots used at the start of the music video by flashing between the shots and other clips previously shown. This hypes up the end of the music video and creates a tenses atmosphere. We found that when we showed our video to our teacher and peers, we were told that the end wasn't captivating. So to leave the ending on a cliff hanger which leads to nothing, we will show shots of the test tube and the developer which has a hazard symbol on it.

Adding Band & Song Name

So we have started adding our band and song name to the start of our music video to introduce us.
We decided to go with a very simple font for our band name. This was done on Adobe PhotoShop. We tried with both white and black background

White Background
Black Background
For the name of our song 'Cannonball', we decided to experiment with the font design. We went with a scratch like design we found on dafont.com.Once again, we experimented with a white and black background.

Filming Random Bits

Today we managed to film a few random bits while in Central London. We needed a couple more random shots to make jump cuts. We film a few new bits including:

1. A helicopter (which we coincidentally saw in the sky)
2. Bubbles
3. Under a bridge
4. Water
5. Lights

These shots (although they are fairly simple) will make a huge difference to our music video. At the moment, we have the problem of lack of jump cuts and quick paced editing. Some of our shots are too long which is not suitable for our music video - due to the fact that our song is fast. So having these random bits will allow us to make better jump cuts and have shorter shot durations.

These are a few still shots from the videos we took today

Music Video Draft

This is a draft for our music video after filming our last scenes. At the moment, we're just putting clips together to see what works together with what. What we have realised is that our shot durations need to be shorter to make the clips much choppier.

LAST FILMING DAY!!

Today we filmed the very last shots we need for our music video.
Below are a few location shots:

We shot in an open field which also had a forest bit. It was very very cold and muddy, but we managed to get the shots that we planned, as well as shots we thought of while on location. This also gave us more of an insight about where we wanted to go with our music video and how we can portray our protagonist through the narrative.

Magazine Advert Developments

I decided to use the same image as the cover of my digipak for my magazine advert. I felt as though having a link between the two makes it more memorable among existing and future customer.

I experimented with a range of different backgrounds and overlays before I chose the final design. I soon figured that adding some colour to the design made even the slightest difference and made the advert pop more.

Free Poster

After doing some research, I found out that some digipaks have free posters attached to the pack for fans to paste on walls or do whatever they want with them. This helps to promote the artist as a whole and helps the audience to remember them.

I decided to include this unique aspect to my digipak by including a free poster 'signed' by the artist.
I did a photoshoot with my artist and got some potential images. The shots are very simple design but still effective.

Chosen Photo:

I made the final poster black and white as I felt that it gave the photo some edge and looked better in black and white generally.

Magazine Advert ANALYSIS

'Red' - Taylor Swift

I like this advert as the image itself used is not in colour but rather black and white. This immediately draws attention to the main texts in the advert, such as the name of the album (RED) and the artists name, as well as other information which accompanies the magazine advert and promotion of the new album. Once again, just like the Rita Ora poster, three main colours have been stuck to. I believe this is very effective, especially when one of the colours has significance to the name of the album. The colours red, white and black are used. Black and white texts compliments the black and white imagery used as the background of the magazine advert. This once again has some significance between the artist and the what is being advertised. The cover of the album has also been included on the design to help audiences recognise what they are buying. What I also noticed is how the same font used on the album cover has been used on the magazine advert title for the word 'RED'. Lastly, other relevant information has been included, such as examples of songs featured on the album, what date the album is available and where it can be purchased. Once again, the artist has included the link to her website so customers can find out other information.

Adele 21

This is a great example of a minimalist magazine advert design. All the necessary information has been included.
The imagery used for the magazine advert has the same tone and mood as the image used for the album cover. Black and white has been used with a major focus on shadows to create a certain mood in the image. Two colours have been used on the text - white and green. Once again, this is an effective technique as it helps the audience to immediately recognise the artist and what is being advertised as there is correlation between the advert and the album cover. The same font and and layout has been used in the album title - ADELE 21. This also helps to give the image some proportion and balance, as there aren't too many things on the page. The advert also includes the fact that she is a Grammy Winner, which aso contributes to promoting her as an artist, as some people may use that to decided whether they want a CD or not. In small print, the companies she has worked with has been mentioned. This gives the companies some publicity as well.

Magazine Advert ANALYSIS

The ORA Tour - Rita Ora

The main element that I really like about this advert is the use of three main colours, and how the designer has consistently stuck to these colours. The use of red, white and black has been effectively used to convey a message to their target audience. Although the advert doesn't include an image of her album which would be played on the tour, her image has been made the focal point of this advert, while the accompanying artists have been made much smaller to show Rita Ora as the main artist of the night. Both Rita Oras name as well as her accompanying artists 'Iggy Azalea' and 'Havana Brown' have been written in red to show that they are the artists. Their pictures have also been included on the advert to either remind audiences of who they are or to allow them to match the face to the name. The tour dates have also been included, along with the venues that the event will take place. Lastly a link to each of the artists website has been included, so audiences can find out more or even look into their new and or previously released albums. The positioning of the images with the text has been done very well by making sure the most important parts of a text is larger and bolder than other text which isn't as important.

'Right Place Right Time - Olly Murs'

In comparison to Rita Ora's advert design, this is more of a quirky fun design which could possibly reflect the artists image/personality. There is a link between the name 'Olly Murs' and the actual image of the artist. The colour used for the name of the artist is the same colour as the artists suspenders in the image. The designer has thought about how to link the overall image of the artist with the promotion of their product. The name of the album has been included on the advert, but the image of the album has been left out. The name of the album on sale has also been written in a different font and colour. This allows the audience to know the difference between the name of the album and the rest of the advert.
The words 'OUT NOW' has been used just underneath the album title to provide information on when it is available to customers. I also like how two hits from the album has been included on the advert so customers are able to immediately know what kind of songs have been included in the album. Laslty, a link to the artists website has been included on the advert to give customers the opportunity to find out more information. My favourite element about this advert is how the artist image fills half the page while the relevant information fills the other half of the page. This also helps to make him centre.

Digipak Final Design

Already Existing Magazine Adverts

We have started looking at magazine adverts for our digipaks and how new album releases can be promoted.

I looked into Jesse J 'Who You Are' album release magazine advert as well as Rihannas 'Rated R' advert and have been made my own notes regarding how each artist has been represented and their music promoted, as well as how it links with the album being promoted.

Functions of a magazine advert:

1. To promote the artist
2. To sell the song
3. To be eye catching

Conventions of a magazine advert:

1. The release date
-Important as the audience needs to know when they can purchase the album
2. Album/song title
-To be able to purchase the album, you would need to know the name of it
3. Image of album cover
-To help the audience purchase it, they would need to know what the album looks like. This also helps to promote the band.
4. Artist name
-The audience needs to know what the name of the artist/band is
5. Information about album
-So the target audience can get an idea of what would be in the album and what some of the song titles are.
6. Where it is available to purchase
-Audience would be able to know where they can purchase and which platforms it is available.
7. Record label logo
-By knowing which record labels they are signed to, we would know what kind of music it is.

Making My Digipak - CD & Inside

I wanted to try something different on the inside of my digipak, rather than have an image of the artist.
I decided to use gold and silver vinyl. This created a very nice pattern and made the inside of the digipak pop. I used this as well for the design of the CD. Since my CD would slip inside, I decided to experiment with a blank CD

I initially thought about using a mixture of colours of vinyl on the inside. But after realising that my digipak itself was silver, I thought that silver and gold would work well together.

I used vinyl for the CD as well in order for both the inside and the CD to match and create a pattern on the inside.
